Consensus building on KBD

The issue of consensus building on major dams in any country is like catching a bull by the horns that is bolting in all directions. A case in retrospect is of Kalabagh dam on which no serious effort has been made by the Federal Government to allay unfounded fears of provinces. The public must be informed about technical aspects of the vital aspects of the hydroelectric dam that would generate cheap power, store essential supplies of water and also help in mitigating the disastrous effects of floods. The melting of Himalayan glaciers due to deposition of soot at height of 5 to 6 thousand meters in the wake of global warming would need many dams. It is about time that the President or Prime Minister tried to catch the bull of Kalabagh dam by the horns to harness it for the lasting benefit of the nation to get rid of the cost of two billion barrels of oil yearly in generating cheap power and irrigating another 4 to 5 million acres of new land for sowing crops. Perhaps our President ought to try his hand at catching the bull by the horns to leave his name in the annals of history. DR. MUHAMMAD YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, Novemver 25.
