RAWALPINDI (INP) - General David Hurley, Chief of Defence Forces, Australia called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at General Headquarters on Friday. The visiting dignitary remained with the COAS for some time and discussed matters of professional interest, particularly the situation in Afghanistan. Sources said the Australian General particularly appreciated the role of Pakistan Army in fighting terrorism and the huge sacrifices it made for peace and tranquility in the region and the world at large. The two armed forces leaders also discussed ways and means to further enhance cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries. Meanwhile, General David Hurley, Chief of Defence Force, Australia called on Federal Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and discussed wide spectrum of issues ranging from situation in Afghanistan, ongoing military action in FATA and the need for foreign assistance in capacity building of Pakistan Armed Forces were discussed. Both sides urged the need for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan in which contributions of all stakeholders were necessary. Recent improvement in the diplomatic relations with India were discussed and the need to strengthen economic ties between the two neighbours was emphasised. Ahmad Mukhtar appreciated Australian government for its economic assistance during earthquake and recent floods in Pakistan. A large number of Pakistani military officers are undergoing specialised training in the Australian defence and security institutions.
