ISLAMABAD - On the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid.

Zahid had tendered his resignation following the order of Special Court implicating him as accused in the high treason case along with the then military ruler Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf for clamping emergency in the country.

The PM after consultation with close party aides accepted the resignation of Zahid Hamid, who, however, would hold his position as Member National Assembly.

Sources in the government informed that Zahid Hamid was the de fecto law minister of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) government and looking after all the legal and constitutional matters of the government.

Zahid was also head of a sub-committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms and was handling the technicalities relating to the reformation of the system and now he would also step down from this position as well, a source in the government informed.

The sources informed The Nation that as Zahid Hamid was handling so many important matters he would continue performing his duties without portfolio as government could not afford to lose his expertise on legal and constitutional matters.
