Rebuilt school blown up in Mohmand

MOHMAND AGENCY - Unidentified miscreants blew up a government primary school for boys in Mohmand Agency near Pak-Afghan border, officials said on Friday.

The school was situated in Chamarkand area of Safi Tehsil, 75 kilometres from the agency headquarters, Ghalanai.

Sources said some miscreants had planted explosive material in the school, which exploded with a bang, destroying the building completely. No loss of life was reported. However, the school record was damaged.

Assistant Agency Education Officer Abdus Sattar Khan said the school was reconstructed in 2012-13 after it was first blown up in 2009-10. He added that a total of 75 children were enrolled in the school and it was smoothly functioning.

Sattar said 127 government-run schools had been destroyed in the tribal region from 2009 to 2016, out of which construction works on more than 70 schools had been completed.

PESHAWAR POLICE FOIL TERROR BID

Staff Reporter from Peshawar adds: Police claimed to have thwarted a major sabotage bid in Peshawar by defusing a device containing four kilograms of explosive material near Gul Bahar area on Friday.

Police said information was received regarding presence of suspected explosive device concealed in a packet. The device, planted near a service station on Mohammad Abad road in Afrido Ghari area, also contained ball bearings and wires.

The bomb disposal squad promptly reached the site and defused the device successfully. Police also arrested a suspected terrorist from the site, identified as Hameedullah son of Saeed Mohammad, resident of Hasan Khail, Khyber Agency.

Police claimed the suspect was affiliated with a defunct organisation based in Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency. The suspect was shifted to unknown place for further interrogation.
