At least nine people have died in flash floods as torrential rains lashed Italy from the Alps to Sicily. Most of the victims were in Borghetto Vara, a village in the north-western coastal region of Liguria, 45 miles from Genoa. Waters and mud drove through the village, collapsing at least one building, said the authorities. One victim died while trying to clear gutters in the coastal town of Monterosso, built around a small natural gulf. Two others died in Aulla in the nearby province of Massa Carrara. The head of La Spezia's provincial government, Marino Fiasella, told Sky at least six people were missing. Floodwaters swept away roads and bridges in some places and several towns in Liguria remained cut off. Officials said major highways and the railway in the region would remain closed at least until Sunday.
