HEAD MARALA (Sialkot) - PML-N leader Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the 20-megawatts Marala Hydropower Project at the Head Marala near Sialkot. The project which is funded by the Asian Development Bank will be completed in 30 months at a cost of US $ 35.38 million. After its completion, the project would be helpful in steering out Sialkot of the energy crisis. Giving a detailed briefing about the project, Energy Department Provincial Secretary Rab Nawaz said that the project would be completed in May 2014 while the contact of the project had been awarded to a Chinese firm namely M/s SINOTEC-SHPE (JV) under the renewable Energy Development Sector Investment Programme funded by the ADB. He added that the project had the initial installed capacity of 7.64 MW having number of units 4Kaplan Turbine with annual generation 50.3 GWh (50.3 million units). This hydropower power site exists on Upper Chenab Canal at downstream of the head regulator of UCC at Marala Barrage. The barrage is located about 22 km north-west of Sialkot city on River Chenab. However, the main components of the project include Head race Channel, Power House, Tail Race Channel, Spillway, Substation, transmission Line, residential Colony and offices, he added. Rab Nawaz revealed that the ADB had offered a multi-tranche loan of US $ 500 million to the Pakistan government for development of the renewable energy resource, under the Programme. Punjab had availed the first tranche of US $ 98 million for construction of five small hydropower projects on canal falls including Head Marala. He said that the power project would be helpful to provide uninterrupted supply of electricity to the export industries of Sialkot, badly hit by power outages. He narrated that the Punjab government had started implementation on a mega project of establishing 200 MW hydropower projects on the canal system in Punjab, besides keeping the industrial wheel moving towards the goal of industrial development in the Punjab. He said that the project would also be a role model for the other provinces, as it would be a timely initiated and revolutionary step for boosting industries and providing maximum job opportunities for the local skilled and un-skilled people. He said that as many as 50 government offices were being converted to solar power while the solar power supply would also be provided soon to several off-grid schools and basic health units in Punjab. On the occasion, MNAs, MPAs, Chinese experts, M/s SINOTEC-SHPE (JV) President Guang Ming and Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Naeem Anwar Qureshi were also present. 600kg unhygienic meat seized : Cases were registered against quacks on the application of Deputy Director Health and 600 kg unhygienic meat was also seized and destroyed by the Veterinary Officer. As per detail, DDO Health Dr Khalid Mahmood conducted a raid at Afzal Clinic and Ali Dental Clinic. The owners of the shops could not provide any proper degree and any permission from any department concerned for the practice. The Mangtanwala Police have registered cases against quacks Muhammad Afzal and Allah Ditta respectively. Meanwhile, Veterinary Officer Health Dr Sohail Anjum seized and destroyed 600-kg unhygienic meat being transported to Lahore from Riaz alias Raju and Liaquat Ali, residents of Barah Garh. The Barah Garh Police have registered a case against the accused.
