LAHORE - A 26-year-old political worker was shot dead while seven others got injured in a clash between the supporters of two parties at Circular Road last night.

All the injured were shifted to Mayo Hospital where doctors said the condition of three was critical.

The police identified the deceased as Khurram Shahzad who was a worker of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Initial reports said the PTI and PML-N workers clashed as they came face to face during an election rally near Yakki Gate at Circular Road where the PTI leaders have established their election camp. The clash took a deadly turn when some ‘unidentified’ men opened fire which resulted in Shahzad’s death.

Immediately after the incident, the PTI leaders held the ruling party responsible for the killing of its worker and alleged that the government was trying to influence the elections through terror.

PTI’s chief organiser for Punjab Ch Muhammad Sarwar said the provincial government has failed to provide security to the masses and alleged it was patronising the killers. Sarwar accused the police of serving the ruling party’s cause and said it was protecting the criminals instead of catching them.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also took notice of the incident and ordered the police to arrest the culprits immediately. He ordered the relevant authorities to extend full medical facilities to the injured. He also sought a detailed report from the CCPO Lahore.

After the incident, PTI leaders including Sarwar and Shafqat Mahmood reached Yakki Gate Police Station along with a large number of party workers who were chanting slogans against the govt and the police.

A large number of police personnel were deployed outside the police station to avoid any untoward incident. DIG Operations Lahore Haider Ashraf also reached there to further investigate the matter. He held talks with the PTI leaders and assured them the arrest of the culprits involved in the incident.

This was the third incident in the provincial capital since the announcement of local bodies’ elections that a PTI worker has been targeted. Earlier, PTI had claimed the killing of two of its candidates in Garhi Shahu and Garden Town areas.
