LAHORE - The day of Ashura, Muharram 10th, was observed with traditional fervour and due reverence across the country on Saturday amid elaborate security arrangements including suspension of cellular phone service.

It is the martyrdom day of Imam Hussain (AS), his family members and companions in Karbala.

Three layers security was put in place with all linking roads along the routes of processions sealed off by placing containers and barbwires.

The mourners were allowed joining the processions and entering venues of Majalis after scanning through walk through gates and thorough body search by security personnel.

No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the country.

In Lahore, the main Zuljinah procession emerged from historical Nisar Haveli in the Walled City on Friday that culminated at Karbala Gamay Shah on Saturday evening after passing through traditional route.

Tazia, Alam and Zuljinnah processions taken out from various areas joined the main procession at different places.

On the conclusion of the procession, Majlis-e-Sham-e-Ghariban was arranged at Karbala Gamay Shah that continued throughout the night.

Zakirs described the agony and pain of family and companions of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) grandson, while the participants mourned over the heart-crushing tragedies faced by the Prophet’s family.

They shed light on the historical, social and religious aspects of supreme sacrifice of Imam Hussain ibn-e-Ali.

The security personnel were deployed along routes of Tazia, Alam and Zuljinnah processions and venues of Majalis to avoid any untoward incident.

The procession passed its route including Mohallah Chehel Bibian Imambargah Syed Wajid Ali Shah, Lakar Mandi, Imambargah Mehdi Shah, Mubarak Haveli, Chowk Nawab Sahab, Kucha Qazi Khan, Imambargah Molvi Feroze Ali, Kucha Miskinan, Mohallah Pir Gilanian, Imambargah Syed Rajab Ali Shah, Chohata Mufti Baqar, Chowk Purani Kotwali, Kashmiri Bazar, Sunehri Masjid, Dabbi Bazar, Suha Bazar, Gumti Bazar, Said Mitha Bazar, Tehsil Bazar, Bazar Hakiman, Unchi Masjid and Bhaati Chowk before ending at Karbala Gamay Shah.

Sabeels of juices, milk and cool water were set up along the route to facilitate the mourners. The administration put up extra lights along the route which not only brightened the area but also provided a sense of security to the participants.
