KARACHI - The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a deputy commissioner FBR over illegal tax refunds while seven other accused also apprehended after cancellation of ad-interim bails by the Supreme Court.

According to a spokesperson, NAB Karachi has arrested one accused namely Rauf Abdul Nasir, Deputy Commissioner Regional Tax office-III FBR Karachi, from District Tharparkar. 

The accused is nominated in an investigation regarding illegal sales Tax refunds. The accused has been charged for illegally sanctioning sales tax refunds with respect to the business firms that never existed. “Such refunds were initiated, processed and sanctioned against fake and bogus invoices by the FBR officials in connivance with each other, which resulted in loss to national exchequer to the tune of Rs 120 million,” spokesperson added.

It is pertinent to mentioned that NAB Karachi has already filed 8 References in Accountability Courts against the scam of illegal tax refunds worth Rs 700 million. The arrested accused will be produced before Accountability Court.

Separately, NAB Karachi has arrested seven accused persons consequent upon cancellation of ad-interim bails by Supreme Court of Pakistan Principal bench Islamabad. The arrested accused persons are charged for illegal transfer of precious government land on the basis of fake and fabricated documents in Deh Rehri Bin Qasim Town District Malir Karachi by way of inserting fake entries in the name of non-existing persons and its subsequent transfer in the name of private persons.

The precious land of 77 acres is worth Rs 385 million.  Reference has already been filed against 12 accused persons. The arrested accused persons will be transferred to Karachi after legal formalities and produced before the Accountability Court.

It may be noted that two accused persons are already in judicial custody, names of accused arrested including Allah Bachayo Chandio former DO Revenue, Shoukat Hussain Jokhio, former DDO revenue, Bin Qasim Town, Ali Akbar Hingoro, former DO revenue, Sabir Hussain, former Assistant Mukhtiarkar, Bin Qasim Town, Ali Sher Mirani, former Mukhtiarkar, Bin Qasim Town, Nazir Ameen Maqbool, former Mukhtiarkar and Nazir Ahmed Malkani, beneficiary of illegal land.
