In a meeting of the local clerics held on September 19 at Masjid Qasim Khan in Peshawar, it was announced that the Eid moon had been sighted at various places of the province and, thus, Eid will be held on September 20. The meeting was also attended by federal Minister for Railways Ghulam Ahmad Bilour. On the other hand, the meeting of the Central Royyat-e-Hilal Committee held on September 20, after receiving witnesses of sightings of the moon from various places of Pakistan, declared in the chairmanship of Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman that Eid will be held on September 21. Many news channels of Pakistan showed the moon live on this day. It could easily be assumed from the position and size of the moon that the verdict of Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman and his associates was correct and the first of Shawal 1430 Hijri will be on September 21. Meteorological department and SPARCO also seconded the committee's decision. Now two days later, Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, while talking of the two Eids in Pakistan, did not mention the moon sighting witnesses received by the meeting in Masjid Qasim Khan but emphasized instead on the demand that Pakistan should celebrate Eid with Saudi Arabia. I think more than 80 percent Pakistanis have reposed their trust in Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman, even though, Mr. Ghulam Ahmad Bilour calls Mufti Sahib 'remains of the Musharraf era'. As a matter of fact, Mufti Sahib have always swayed away from ex-President Musharraf and only performed his duty according to the true spirit of Shariah. Although my knowledge of religious matters is very limited but I do know that the Islamic calendar is dependant on moon sighting and the jurisdiction of the Central Royyat-e-Hilal Committee within Pakistan is final in this regard. The Islamic calendar in Pakistan is compiled according to the monthly verdict of the Committee on moon sightings. If we have to observe Eid with Saudi Arabia, why do we have a Central Royyat-e-Hilal Committee in Pakistan? -MUHAMMAD ALI ZAMIR, Bahawalpur, September 23.
