Barrister Syed Mohammed Jawaid Iqbal Jafree has filed a petition in the US Court for the Southern District of New York that he be granted leave to join the appointed lawyer of the court (without fee) to assist in the defence of Dr Aafia Siddiqui (Summa cum Laude MIT; PhD Brandeis University) who is being prosecuted in this court. Barrister Jafree has referred to the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce (1959) between Pakistan and USA as well as the Vienna Conventions which were violated by US in the "brutal kidnapping and renditioning of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and her three innocent children from Karachi in 2002". Jafree has also formally requested that the US District Court order that charges against Aafia Siddiqui be dropped or suspended and after returning her to Pakistan, proper extradition proceedings may be initiated by all means if US has any legitimate charges against her. It is worth mentioning for the sake of record that Dr Aafia Siddiqui has rejected the three American lawyers that Pakistan Embassy had hurriedly appointed for defending her at a whopping cost of $2 million. One finds it rather strange that the Pakistan Embassy immediately remitted the backdated $2 million but could not afford posting a 40-penny letter to the International Court of Justice in Hague, Holland which has the salutary jurisdiction in the matter as per Article 23 of the Treaty of Friendship mentioned above. -M.
