ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Friday waived off Rs 2.16 billion agricultural loans of small farmers of Malakand division affected by militancy. The PM made this announcement as part of the measures taken by the government to provide relief to the affected people of the troubled areas. The government had declared Swat and other areas, where farmers were affected due to terrorism and militancy, as calamity-hit. The farmers were not making any earning and had been without work for many months as the wave of terrorism swept their area. They were forced to abandon their farms and the government shifted them to relief camps set up in safer areas of NWFP. The Prime Minister also directed the coalition government of NWFP to take immediate steps for finalisation of the names of the affected farmers.
