PPP set to challenge Sharif in NA-123

LAHORE - The PPPs Punjab organisation, which met here Friday, with Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan in the chair, formulated recommendations for partys central command in the context of coming bye-election in Punjab, as well as about party strategy on the controversial appointment of former IG Sindh, Rana Maqbool Ahmad as secretary prosecution by the Punjab Government. About the forthcoming bye-polls, it recommended that the party should not leave the field open to PML-N, especially in NA-123, from where Nawaz Sharif plans to contest election to the seat vacated for him by Makhdoom Javaid Hashmi of his own party. The meeting also discussed Rana Maqbools appointment in Punjab, and termed it an effort by the PML-N to sabotage the process of national reconciliation initiated by President Zardari. Its highly unfair to give the key posting in Punjab to a person about whom everybody knew to be the man under whose supervision President Zardari was severely tortured during his imprisonment, commented one of the participants of the meeting. The meeting, however, decided not to make public the partys official response to the issue till the party co-chairmans return from the US. This is why partys Punjab secretary general, Samiullah Khan, in his media briefing, took the stance that this issue was not todays agenda. However, some inquisitive reporters later made him concede that this issue was also on the agenda but had to be dropped at the last moment for reasons of expediency, which he did not explain. On Rana Maqbools issue, the PPP leader only confined himself to saying that both PPP and PML-N should not take any step to undermine the process of national reconciliation and hurt the sentiments of party workers on both sides. Talking about PPPs strategy on upcoming bye-election, Sami said that partys Punjab organization has recommended to partys top leadership that PPP should field its candidates in all constituencies including the one from where PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif plans to contest election. According to him, Punjab organisation has asked prospective candidates to send their applications by September 30, the last date for obtaining nomination papers from ECs office. He made it clear that final decision about putting party candidates against those of the PML-N and other parties would be taken by PPPs parliamentary board headed by President Asif Ali Zardari.
