College student commits suicide over domestic issue

LAHORE - A 17-year-old college student committed suicide by hanging himself by a ceiling fan at his house over some domestic dispute here in Hanjarwal area, police said on Saturday. The police said the boy identified as Asad Farooq, resident of Rana Town in Hanjarwal locality, had been residing along with his mother after the death of his father some two years ago. After Friday midnight, police said, the boy confined himself in the bedroom and committed suicide as his mother had admonished him over some minor issue. The ill-fated mother lost her mental balance after she witnessed the body of her young son was hanging from the ceiling fan in the room. The police handed over the body to the deceased's family without autopsy. Man dies in accident A 35-year-old man was killed while three others wounded when a mini bus smashed into a car here in Satu Katla area, police said on Saturday. The police said the mini bus smashed into the car due to over speeding. Muhammad Rashid died on the spot while three other passengers sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. The police are investigating. Meanwhile, two children died after they fell down from the rooftop of their houses in two different incidents here on Saturday. The police sources said three-year-old boy Abdul Haider and a 12-year-old girl Zabees fell down from the rooftop of the house in Batapur and Johar Town areas respectively. They were rushed to local hospitals where they succumbed to injuries on early Saturday. 9th class student dRowned in pond A 14-year-old boy drowned in a pond caused by inundation of rainwater while he was trying to rescue his teenage friends when they were catching fish here in Araian Wala Village in Raiwind area, police said on Saturday. Rescue workers launched the operation that continued for more than three hours to pull out the body of the boy but failed to do so and later suspended the search operation due to bad light. Rescue 1122 officials said that they reached the spot soon after they received an emergency call from the village located in Raiwind City police area. The villagers contacted the rescuers and informed that a teenager boy drowned in soil digging site that turned into a water pond during recent monsoon rains. The rescue workers continued efforts for more than three hours in order to recover the body of the boy, later identified as Tanveer Aslam but failed. Muhammad Aslam father of the boy told the rescue workers that his son, a student of class 9, went there for fishing along with his friends Tauqeer, Zeeshan, Faisal and Akbar. The boy Tanveer was sitting along with his close friend Faisal on the edge of the pond when suddenly his friends Tauqeer, Zeeshan and Akbar started calling for help as they were trying to come out of deep water. The boy immediately jumped into the water and managed to pull out Tauqeer, Zeeshan and Akbar but he himself drowned in the deep water as he got slipped while coming out of the pond. The father of the victim further said that he could not believe the death of his son because he was a good swimmer. Rescuer said that they tried their best to pull out the body of Tanveer but they were not able to do so. They said that during the search operation they found the pond was some 20 to 30 feet deep. The rescue workers have suspended the search operation due to bad light. The rescuers will start the search operation again on early Sunday, police said. Ashraf Javed
