LAHORE - Senior male professors are once again in the race to win the office of the principal of Fatima Jinnah Medical College (an institution of the female students) going to be vacant next month, disclosed college sources on Monday. Sources said since inception of Pakistan, seven male professors remained posted as principal of the FJMC for 33 years while nine female professors could get themselves posted on the said post for only 27 years after litigation and hard struggle against male professors. A female professor of the college seeking anonymity, said FJMC was an institution meant to impart education to the female students and there should be a female head of the institution. No female professor has ever been appointed as head of any institution of the male students. So there is no logic behind appointment of a male as head of a female institution, she said. Female professors have always been facing problems for their appointment as FJMC principal and keeping in view the said situation in 1980, then secretary health Brig S Khawaja had issued a notification stating that while making promotions and appointments in the college the senior female staff should be preferred. But the directions contained in the notifications were not implemented in letter and spirit and appointments on political basis continued and male professors backed by political parties were appointed as principal of FJMC, said another female professor. In the past, Dr Shabnam Iqbal Niazi, a female professor has filed a writ petition in the court against appointment of Dr Zafar Aziz Khan as FJMC principal. She was successful in getting her viewpoint validated by the court and was appointed as principal of the college. Similarly, there remained a tug of war between Professor Dr Akbar Ch and Dr Shahina Manzoor when former was appointed as Principal of the college in 2002.
