LAHORE Two Rawalpindi-based teams made their way into the semi-finals of the 20th NBP National Football Challenge Cup (NFCC) at Multans Qila Kuhna Qasim Bagh on Sunday night. Army showed guts in tie-break to beat KESC 4-1 after 120 futile minutes and holders KRL struck once in each session to beat PIA 2-0. Both the semi-finals will be played on Tuesday, 27 April. Navy will face Army (7.30 PM) and WAPDA will collide with KRL (10.15 PM). The hotly-contested clash between two star-studded teams - Army, KESC - provided exciting football despite no score at full time. The 30-minutes extra time also saw no result and Kharan-born referee Sattar Badini called both the teams to try their luck on penalty shoot-out. The soldiers turned out to be far better in this session as electricitymen produced only one goal through Muhammad Essa while Muhammad Rasool and Abdul Rehman were aimless. Armys four successful penalty takers were Imran Hussain, Sharjeel Vicky, Muhammad Imran and Mehmood Khan. Holders KRL held upperhand in their match against PIA and notched 2-0 win. It was repeat of the Hyderabads final last year when Muhammad Qasims goal separated the two sides. This time the scorers were Zubair Ahmed and Kalim Ullah. KRL, using the event as preparation for coming 6th AFC Presidents Cup at Myanmar, slammed the opener when Sialkot-born midfielder Zubair raced onto a long ball and clipped the ball past keeper with fierce drive. KRL led 1-0 at interval and added the second in the 60th minute when 18-year-old Chaman-born Kalim Ullah went on his own to steer the ball low into right corner. It was Kalims fifth goal of the event and he is now joint leading hitman with Arif Mehmood (WAPDA).
