SAHIWAL-Anjuman-e-Kashtkaraan President Rehmat Ali expressed concern over the interference of government in determining the rates of potato, and said that if the government imposed a decision on the farmers in this regard, it would hold protests across the country.

He was talking to newsmen along with a delegation of growers. He said that the rates of grains were decreasing while the expenditures of inputs such as fertilisers, diesel and pesticides were increasing, which is the main cause of the collapse of agri sector. He said that the federal government should refrain from threatening the grower regarding potatoes rates.

District Cold Storage Association Sahiwal president Arshad Hussain said that during the last three years, the potato growers had been ruined because of its low rates and less yield. He said that the government was not facilitating the growers in this regard. He further said that severe cold wave in the current year had badly damaged the potatoes crop. Resultantly, its yield had been reduced to 50 percent and the rates of potatoes have been increased, he said.

The speakers said that low rates of potatoes last year had caused heavy losses to the growers and traders. Therefore, the government should not interfere in the fixation of potato rates.
