Natural disasters

The floods in Pakistan created an unprecedented situation which called for unprecedented measures. During the last few weeks we have seen a lot of effort to deliver aid to the flood affectees by government, international agencies and, more prominently, by private volunteers and NGOs. However most of this effort has been uncoordinated and haphazard resulting in limited impact considering scale of the disaster. In the aftermath of large-scale natural calamities such as Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, researchers and scientists have been claiming that global warming threatens the planet by triggering more earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, etc. So the world is forced to take notice and make collaborative efforts for harnessing our collective power for managing the natural disasters. -SALIM GHAURI, Lahore, August 26.
