KARACHI - Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on Sunday asserted that the PPP was ready to sacrifice more prime ministers to save the current democratic set-up achieved after unflinching efforts of the former slain premier, Benazir Bhutto.
Addressing a press conference at the PPP Media Cell, Khuhro opined that the judiciary should tender an apology for supporting the four martial law rules in the country.
PPP leaders Senator Saeed Ghani, Najmi Alam and others were also present on the occasion.
Khuhro said that the state would be weakened if democracy derailed that will lead to the imposition of Article 6 of the Constitution, against the judiciary. He said that action against the elected prime minister was a conspiracy against democracy. He warned that this anti-democracy plot might derail the democratic system in the country.
The speaker further said that democracy was restored in the country after huge sacrifices of the PPP and other political parties’ leaders and workers. “The judiciary had not taken any action against the martial law dictators, starting from Ayub Khan down to Pervez Musharraf.
He said the present apex court was not a summary court, and hoped that it would not announce a pre-decided verdict on Monday (today) on the NRO implementation issue.
“We cannot attack the apex court as former premier Mian Nawaz Sharif did,” he remarked as he recalled that Yousuf Raza Gilani had appeared thrice before an SC bench.
Khuhro ruled out any confrontation between the ruling PPP and judiciary, saying former premier Gilani underlined the need for adopting a middle way to avoid the conflict.
He, however, asserted that his party’s principle stance was not to write any letter to the Swiss bank. “We would not allow anyone to trial our martyred leader Benazir Bhutto.”
On August 8, the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf for not implementing its order.
The court asked the premier to appear in person before a five-judge bench, headed by Justice Asif Khosa, on August 27 to respond to the notice.
