After Bhutto, Benazir leads from her grave

'I led Benazir Bhutto to the room where her brother Mir Murtaza Bhutto was lying dead, she became hysterical as soon as she saw the motionless body of Mir. She cried like a child though she was immensely brave. I never found her lacking in courage, never, but that night, I felt as if she had lost all of her courage. The assassination of Mir was too much for her in the backdrop of the judicial murder of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto. I had no idea I would be remembering her this day, one year after she embraced martyrdom in cruel Rawalpindi,' the towering man sighed for a while and tried in vain to control his tears. The man was Tariq Islam nephew of Bhutto and cousin of Benazir. The occasion was the launching of a book on Benazir Shaheed. Tariq Islam never tried to project himself during the lifetime of all Bhuttos; he remained glued to his privacy. His name was never mentioned in any controversy that opponents of Bhuttos loved to create. That evening Tariq Islam never openly wept for a moment but his audience was crying as it paid tribute to the last Bhutto, Benazir. 'I have filed to figure out why Bhuttos die and dies so young.' People listened in silence; they had no answer. Tariq Islam tried to stop Benazir from returning to the homeland but she was determined to come back. As the first death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto is being observed today, the country is still struggling to come to term with that great loss. The PPP easily secured power chiefly due to the tragedy that occurred in Liaquatbagh on December 27, 2007, it is failing to find a real replacement of its leader. It is hard to replace her. It is true that Asif Ali Zardari is the president but he lacks that statesmanship and the experience to run a difficult country. He is shrewd yet he is surrounded by many of those whom Benazir Bhutto kicked out during her lifetime. Zardari in his wisdom tends to oblige those who were seldom in the good book of the slain leader. He sidelined Naheed Khan, rendered her ineffective although she used to lead the party in the absence of Mohtarma. Hence, this created a huge gap between the average worker and the leader. There are many in the PPP who feel the burden of leadership of the party and the presidency is proving too much for Zardari. They pray for the party. The only thing for Zardari is the fact that he was never a candidate for this situation; it was imposed on him by destiny. Indeed the PPP has this uncanny quality of surviving the crisis after crisis. The PPP as Benazir Bhutto once put it, 'I agree that we perform well in the opposition and not in the government.' There is some feeling in the PPP circles all those who were close to Mohtarma and now being shown the door. Naheed Khan the most trusted one is now living with the memories of Mohtarma only while even Uras Mama is being sidelined who was close to all Bhuttos. He never abandoned Bhuttos even during the worst times and clung to 70 Clifton first and then to Bilawal House. Zardari knew how close his own son and the chairman of the PPP Bilawal Bhutto are to him. Uras was not running the party but he was sympathetic to those who were with Benazir all along and showed their fidelity to her. One day Uras got his marching orders that ended an era for him. There is no denying the fact the new leader of the PPP has failed to accept old guards of Benazir days. This is proving costly for the party and its cadre and some seasoned fellows were found openly talking what people read on the walls in Larkana and elsewhere. This is difficult time for all and sundry. Things are not easy for President Asif Ali Zardari. People are unhappy the way authorities in native Larkana failed to even ensure sanctity of Mohtarma's tomb. Its roof was leaking during recent rain. Nobody took any timely action. This is a sad state of affairs in the PPP as Zulfikar Ai Bhutto's tomb is still under construction even after the lapse of 29 years. What went wrong with the party is not hard to figure out. This is great injustice in the sense Larkana affairs are now being looked after by Zardari clan. Faryal Talpur is MNA on Benazir Bhutto's erstwhile seat. There is an army of leaders and workers who vowed to die for remaining Bhuttos but they could do nothing to save even tomb of Bhuttos. Ayaz Soomro Sindh minister from Larkana had no idea what was going on in his city. The fate witnessed the colossal loss of Bhuttos as the whole family was wiped out. Once Begum Nusrat Bhutto told a group of sympathizers, I am the most unfortunate woman on earth. I lost my husband. My sons are my every thing.' According to Bilawal House ailing Begum Sahiba is in the dark about the fate of her daughter Benazir. Begum Nusrat Bhutto is struggling for life in Dubai, her admirers pray for her life even though her own life was full of tragedies. The only person to mourn these deaths in her own family is Sanam Bhutto; she remained apolitical and even refused to join politics at the request of Benazir. Sanam is a brave lady; she survived to see the end of Zulfikar, Shahnawaz, Murtaza and Benazir. According to Sanam, "I begged Benazir not to go to Pakistan, she looked at me with the saddest eyes I ever saw and said, 'no I will go there. This is my destiny.' My whole family embraced martyrdom and what was left for us except mourning." The whole nation joins Bilawal Bhutto Zaradri in this mourning; he will always miss his great mother with sisters Bakhtawar and Asefa. What is in store for the young Bhuttos nobody knows it but they die young that is the sad history. Even at this hour of colossal loss some estranged Bhuttos are not prepared to forgive mourning Bhuttos. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto led from his grave for almost three decades and now his daughter is leading the PPP from her grave at Garhi Khuda Bux. The PPP workers raised 'zinda hay Bhuto zinda hai (Bhutto is alive) now they raise slogan of' zinda hay bibi zinda hay' (Benazir lives). This is the life.
