Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira has paid glowing tributes to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and said that she would always be remembered as a leader who gave voice to the weak and ordinary people. In a message issued here in connection with the second death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, falling on Sunday (December 27), he acknowledged the sacrifices of Shaheed Benazir and other martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of democracy and regarded them national heroes. The Minister said, Shaheed Benazir gave voice to the voiceless, strength to the weak and motivation to the masses to strive for a goal higher than life. He said Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life to brighten the light of democracy and freedom and to illuminate new ways for progress and prosperity of the people and stability of the country. It is a measure of her greatness that ordinary people who came in contact with her became extraordinary, he said. Qamar Zaman Kaira said that Benazir Bhutto was fully aware of the threats to her life yet she decided to return to her homeland to fight for the restoration of Pakistans place in the community of democratic nations. In line with the true Bhutto legacy, she faced certain death rather than abandon her principles or the people, he said. He added that it was extremism and terrorism, which separated people from their beloved leader. Mr. Kaira termed the attack on Benazir Bhutto not only an attack on an individual, but also on the viability of state and for undermining efforts to build democratic structures for fighting militancy. The tyrants and the killers have killed her but they shall never be able to kill her ideas that drove and inspired a generation towards lofty ideals, he remarked. The Minister said the growing militancy in the region brings to mind Benazir Bhuttos stirring words, the fundamental battle in Pakistan was for the hearts and minds of a generation against fanaticism and extremism, adding this battle can be won only under democracy. He said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is representative of the aspirations of the nation and added that the party is determined to eradicate poverty, ignorance, backwardness and terrorism from Pakistan. As a representative of the aspirations of the people, founder chairman of PPP Zulfikar Ali Bhutto fostered the sapling of democracy in the country while Shaheed Benazir Bhutto gave it her blood to make it a strong tree, the minister added. He said Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for democratic culture, freedom of thought and expression, achievement of human rights and an equal for all society setting a brilliant example not only for Pakistan but also for the whole world. The present democratic government under the courageous and dynamic leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani is following this charter by taking the country on the path of progress and prosperity, he added. He said Benazir Bhutto set out on a mission to serve the national interest by putting aside political differences and personal vanity and they will take this process forward as today they needed this spirit more than ever. We have to display national honor and solidarity on internal and external fronts to show that Pakistanis are conscious and peaceful people, he said. Kaira said time has proved that after Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was the only representative and beloved political leader who brought together people through love, brotherhood and friendship. Without any doubt, the martyred leader was the bond which tied the four provinces and was the reflection of the dreams of the people, he added. He expressed the determination that they would uphold the flag of courage, bravery and sacrifice at every cost which was raised by the martyred leader in the skies of Pakistan. He urged the democratic forces to rededicate themselves to fighting militancy and extremism by strengthening democratic institutions. The Minister prayed that may the souls of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and all martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause, be rest in eternal peace.
