KARACHI (APP) The General Sales Tax (GST) is being reformed and not being withdrawn, Federal Minister for Information, Qamar Zaman Kaira said Sunday while talking to journalists. The Minister visited the KPC to felicitate its newly-elected office bearers. The annual election of the KPC for the year 2011 were held on Saturday. When a journalist asked whether the government was withdrawing the reformed RGST, the Minister replied that reforms were being undertaken in the it. He further explained that it was not the reformed GST rather they were GST reforms. When it is mentioned as reformed GST it suggests that a new tax is being imposed, he added. Qamar Zaman Kaira pointed out that the tax that was introduced some two decades ago in the shape of progressive taxation but with the passage of time a number of exemptions were created in it, which had weakened the tax net. He said that reforming the taxation system in the country was quite important. The tax to GDP ratio was between 9-10 percent which was quite poor by the international standards. The Minister referred to the objections with regard to the GST which suggested that a lot of money was drained out in the public sector corporations, which should be stopped. He said that this was valid and pointed out that the government had started the process for the reformation of Water and Power Development Authority, Pakistan Steel, Pakistan International Airlines etc. A dedicated team of the Finance Ministry was working on this for the formation of autonomous boards and induction of the private sector.
