PPP workers lacklustre response to Larkana visit

LAHORE- A good number of PPP activists, legislators and party office-bearers from across the country left for Larkana on Sunday to attend the central ceremony being held at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on Monday (today) to mark 3rd death anniversary of slain party leader Benazir Bhutto. Reports coming from different cities of Punjab suggest that the number of people visiting the burial place of the Bhuttos this year was small compared to previous years. A number of reasons are being attributed to this lacklustre response by partymen to attend the ritual which has become an annual feature since the demise of party founder ZA Bhutto. Reluctance on the part of party organisations to bear boarding and travel expenses of party workers, security threats and inability of local party leaders to provide adequate lodging facilities at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh are stated to be the main causes of comparatively less number of people visiting BBs Mausoleum this year, said a party source seeking anonymity. He also clarified that a good number of party activists wanted to go to Larkana this year as before but they were instructed to stay in their respective districts and hold functions there to mark the day. It is to be noted that a bunch of estranged PPP workers in Lahore had lodged protest a couple of weeks back over local party leaders decision to take only 10 workers from each City zone along with them to Larkana. It has been learnt that Mondays public gathering at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh to be addressed by party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and other leaders has been cancelled due to security reasons. The co-chairman will now address a select group of party men comprising MNAs, Senators, MPAs and senior office bearers at President House at Naudero. As per sources, the entry into the venue will be through invitation cards which have been issued to around 600 people only. However, arrangements may be made for party workers gathering at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh to listen to their leaders speech through video conferencing, said a party source. The PPP Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is also likely to address the audience on the occasion. Meanwhile, a PPP caravan led by partys Punjab General Secretary Sami Ullah Khan left for Larkana on Sunday morning from partys provincial secretariat in Faisal Town. It comprised 20 vehicles. According to partys Punjab Deputy Secretary General Usman Salim Malik, the caravan got bigger as party men from other cities joined the main procession which passed through the cities of Sahiwal, Khanewal, Lodhran, Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan. Talking to this scribe from Lodhran, Usman Malik said that party caravans from upper Punjab joined the main convoy at Sahiwal, while all caravans would converge at Rahimyar Khan and start onward journey to the burial place of Bhutto on Monday morning (today). A small PPP caravan of partys Lahore organisation also left for its destination on Sunday by train comprising around 250 party workers from 25 City zones.
