Islamabad - The Higher Education Commission will establish a university in Khushab to cater to the needs of the district and adjoining areas, said official on Tuesday.

A decision in this regard was taken at a consultative meeting held here under the chair of HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed. The University of Khushab will be established by merging the existing sub-campuses of the University of Education and Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi.

The additional land of 30 acres at Jauharabad Khushab and 359 kanal and four marlas at Gharimukin Stadium, Mandi Town and Quaidabad will be transferred to the proposed university.

It was also agreed that parliamentarians will pursue the charter of the university with the provincial government for its enactment from the provincial legislature to facilitate the launching of next admissions to the university by February 2018.

Dr Ahmed said that the immediate needs of the proposed university will be borne by the HEC while its development projects will be considered under the Public Sector Development Projects.

The meeting was also attended by members of National Assembly from Khushab Malik Shakir Bashir Awan and Malik Muhammad Uzair Khan, Punjab Minister for Archeology Malik Muhammad Asif Bha Awan, Arid Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor Dr Sarwat N Mirza, University of Education Registrar Dr Manzoom Akhtar, Assistant Commissioner Naushera District Khushab Muhammad Kaleem and others.
