LAHORE - The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore on Tuesday nabbed Sher Abbas in Sheikhupura for his alleged involvement in sale of land worth millions of rupees on fake ‘Fard’ documents. Spokesman for the NAB said the Bureau was approached by numerous complainants in 2014 about sale of hundreds of acres on fake documents.

The beneficiaries sold the land in connivance with property dealers, local patwari and some other revenue officials. NAB Lahore DG initiated an inquiry in August 2014 against 10 accused that turned into an investigation later. In 2015, a corruption reference was filed in an accountability court against the 10 accused.

 NAB had arrested five accused involved in the said scam, including Syed Niaz Hussain Shah, Syed Ibrar Hussain Naqvi, Babar Shehzad, Safdar Abbas and Yar Muhammad Khan. It is pertinent to mention here that accused Yar Muhammad Khan opted for plea bargain and submitted an amount of Rs2.3 million.

The accountability court declared remaining five accused proclaimed offenders. The NAB Lahore would produce the accused before an accountability court on Wednesday (today) for seeking his physical remand for further investigation.

Cellphone ‘smugglers’ caught

The customs authorities claimed to have arrested two smugglers and recovered several cell phones from their possession. A spokesman said Azeem Abbas and Abdur Rehman were coming from Sharjah when they landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport smuggled phones were recovered from their baggage.

Abdur Rehamn was carrying 211 while Azeem Abbas 110 cell phones. The official said that cell phones cost Rs. 6 million in international market. Customs traffic after registration of case has handed over them to investigation and prosecution (I&P) wing for further action.

Arrests

The Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) arrested 85 culprits including 40 proclaimed offenders and recovered weapons from them. According to a statement, the PHP team recovered 39.50 Kg charas, 570  litres liquor, one kalashnikov, 17 pistols and five guns from their possession. The officials handed over the accused and stolen items to local police for further legal action.

The PHP team also recovered five children—Muhammad Awais,Gurya Bibi,Naveed Ahmad,Muzzamil and Dilawar and reunited them with their parents. They rendered help to 3,012 commuters on various points of the highways.

Also, the City Division Police have busted a motorcycle theives gang and arrested its four members.  Stolen motorcycles and illegal weapons were recovered from the. SP City constituted a special police team comprising officials of Badami Bagh police station, which arrested members of Imran Oad gang and recovered four motorcycles, five mobile phones and two pistols.
