Unrecognizable

The PPP founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had always stood up for the rights of the haris, tenants, labourers and workers. The party's new face of today is a rude shock for many. Today, PPP leaders in Punjab Assembly are defending irregularities of Moonis Elahi, the son of Musharraf's Chief Minister, who has taken over hundreds of acres of Roberts Farm lands located in Rahimyar Khan. These lands were given to Moonis Elahi on subsidized rates in abuse of his father's official position while the tenants who worked these lands, despite having the first right, were denied. For the PPP to defend Moonis Elahi, a scion of the family that has always conspired against the Bhuttos, is an outrage for arch PPP supporters like me. Why should the PPP come to the defence of this land-grabbing mafia who are looters, plunderers and habitual loan defaulters. What has happened to the slogan of Roti, Kapra aur Makan? Is it a mere slogan for the new PPP, a license to fool its loyal supporters? Instead of raising their voice for tenants, workers and haris, the PPP legislators are working to help those who deprive them of their rights, their honour and their livelihood. A PPP federal minister has even allegedly tried to pressurize Muktaran Mai, a rape victim that received international fame for her courageous stand. This is certainly not the PPP that Bhutto founded nor the PPP that BB gave her life for. -NAZEER ABRO, Hyderabad, via e-mail, February 11.
