MQM’s uproar may hit Sindh Assembly today

KARACHI - The noisy protests over the issue of alleged remarks of the Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq about his opposition of Hyderabad University, non-allotment of opposition seats as well as against the assent of acting governor to the revived Local Government Ordinance 1979 are expected by the MQM in Sindh Assembly sitting which would resume on Wednesday (today).
Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza will chair the session as Speaker of provincial legislature Nisar Ahmed Khuhro is currently holds the post of acting governor in absence of Dr Ishratul Ebad who is abroad in Dubai and London summoned by his party leadership after repeal of Sindh Peoples Local Government Act 2012 and reviving of Local Government Ordinance 1979.
On the last sitting on Monday, which was adjourned by the Deputy Speaker owing to lack of quorum in the House, the House will resume today as MQM lawmakers would also likely to stage protest against the alleged remarks of Sindh’s Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq, who last week had said that government will not allow to establishing of public university in Hyderabad city as law and order situation was deliberately being created at Sindh University Jamshoro by ‘some elements’ only to materialize their demand of new university.
The MQM has already held protest demonstrations against education minister’s statement remarks, while it likely to repeat same in the today’s Sindh Assembly sitting.
However, the acting governor has not accepted the resignations of the MQM’s ministers as party after parting ways with the PPP government submitted application for allotment of opposition seats for them. But so far neither the Assembly secretariat has allotted them separate seats nor issued notification to appoint MQM’s parliamentary leader as opposition leader. The delay in the non-allotment of seats as well as notification of opposition leader would cause of the MQM’s protest in today’s sitting of Assembly.
Though, the assent/announcement of ‘repeal of Sindh Peoples Local Government Act 2012 and revival of Local Government Ordinance 1979 is not on the agenda of the today’s session of Assembly but officials privy to the assembly secretariat confirmed that the governor’s assent of the bill would be tabled as supplementary agenda.
Meanwhile, the consideration of the ‘Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill 2013, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Law University at Karachi Bill 2013 and other bills are part of the agenda of today’s sitting of assembly, besides report of Standing Committee on Home Department regarding suggestions to improve law and order situation in the province is part of the agenda of the sitting.
However, the PPP government is likely to table some other issues for legislation in the Sindh Assembly which were pending for long time due to opposition of MQM.
Meanwhile, the contacts between two parties in process for patchup between them on the issue but MQM had categorically said that it will take up the Hyderabad University issue in today’s session.
