SC issues show cause notice to sindh IGP

KARACHI - Supreme Court has issued show-cause notice to Sindh Police IG for keeping names secret of police officers involved in crimes and sought reply from him.
Larger bench of the SC issued the show-cause notice during the hearing of Karachi law and order case in Karachi registry on Tuesday.
Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali while expressing displeasure over IG Sindh said it was the job of police and not of the court to provide lists of criminal police officers. The larger bench remarked during the course of hearing as to why the IGP Sindh be not proceeded against under contempt of court case for concealing the facts.
The larger bench observed the order issued by IG Sindh against the accused seemed to be aimed at providing protection to them. Those facing the cases have been appointed in security zone, bench added.  Justice Khilji observed as to why names of the two SSPs who were involved in the crimes have not been given. As to why the lists of officers and other personnel involved in the crimes have not been furnished except MIT, he inquired. Both the SSPs are favorites of whom, he added.  Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali ordered IG to inform the court about the reasons in respect of the officers who have not been suspended. Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali while inquiring from IG said the court be informed what action was taken against the officers.
Justice Khilji Arif remarked police should be compassionate on the city and citizens. The suspected officers have been deployed on the roads to check the people and the persons against whom cases are registered have been appointed in security zone. Prevailing situation in Karachi is not good and we are not living in normal situation. Police officers who are involved in murder cases have been appointed in police stations.
He further remarked “give example of one department which is working. Traders are repatriating the capital. A lull prevails upon the city after Maghrabain. Where the city and country will stand.
Justice Gulzar observed that protection is being provided to criminal police officers. Whosoever is touched, evil springs up from him to the extreme end.
Justice Athar Saeed inquired from the IG Sindh, “Have you not initiated action for fear of losing the job.” The petitioner Mehmood Ahmad Naqvi told the court case was registered against IG Sindh under the charges of holding dual citizenship. FIR was also lodged against IG Sindh and he was culprit.
Justice Athar Saeed observed, “SP Farogh Bashir and SP Farid Jan were involved in murder cases and challan has also been presented against them but they are still working in their respective districts.” Why their names are not included in the list, he inquired.
Talking to media men outside SC Karachi registry, Khawar Shah counsel for IG Sindh said notice does not mean crime has been proved against the IG. We will give explanation tomorrow and if the court is satisfied then notice will be withdrawn.
The hearing was adjourned till Wednesday (today).
