Abid vows to bring laurels for country


ISLAMABAD - M Abid, Pakistan’s No 3 tennis player is determined to bring laurels for country at international level. In an exclusive interview with TheNation on Saturday Abid, who is also a member of Pakistan Davis Cup team which would play tie against Sri Lanka, said it was my childhood dream to represent Pakistan at international circuit and I had achieved my first goal by getting selected for Davis Cup team.
Abid was a former national U-13 champion and had also won all the major tournaments in U18 category and was ranked Pakistan’s No 1 player in that category. he was also a member of Pakistan Junior Davis Cup team which finished runners-up in Myanmar in 2009 just behind the Asian tennis powerhouse Uzbekistan.
Abid also played in Tajikistan in U-18 tournament where he finished 8th in singles and third position in doubles out of a group of 32. Abid then shifted his focus towards seniors category and managed to reach the final of the final of the UBL International Tennis Championship, in which Sri Lankan players also took part and finished runners up, losing the final against Aqeel Khan.
Abid also has the distinction of beating Asiam-ul-Haq in the doubles exhibition match partnering Aqeel. Abid has taken long strides in tennis and had played the final of National Clay Court, but once again he remained unsuccessful to clear final hurdle in his way, losing again to Aqeel. Abid partnering with Aqeel also won the doubles title of the KPK CM Cup.
Abid thanked Highmount Group for lending helping hand to him and requested other major sponsors to come forward and help him in materialising his childhood dream of playing in ATP and ITF events and winning major honours for the country. Abid is currently representing ZTBL. From Pakistani players, he idealised M Khaliq but his all-time favourite is Novak Djokovic and he loves the way Djokovic plays and wants to become a true champion like him in near future.
