LAHORE – Three people, including a 10-year-old girl and her grandmother, were crushed to death when a rashly-driven water tanker ran over a locally-manufactured three-wheeler in the Badami Bagh police precincts, rescuers said on Saturday.

The driver managed escape, police said. According to eyewitnesses, the driver was drunk.

Police said that a rashly-driven water-tanker of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) bumped into a motorcycle-rickshaw on the Ring Road at 11:00 am on Saturday, killing the rickshaw driver, a woman, and her granddaughter on the spot.  The deceased were identified as Sadiqa Bibi, 55, her granddaughter Anam Shaukat, 10, and rickshaw driver Hafeez, 27, the residents of Khokhar Town.

The woman along with her granddaughter was on the way to a local seminary to pick up the younger granddaughter when the accident took place near Gandian Bambian Stop.

The police and rescuers rushed to the site and removed the bodies to the morgue. The police have registered a case and are investigating. The police have also impounded the tanker.  Dozens of locals, including the relatives of the decease gathered at the spot staged a demonstration on the Ring Road.

The demonstrators also demanded immediate arrest of the driver and punitive action against him. The protesters also chanted slogans against the traffic police for their failure to implement traffic rules on the Ring Road.

The protest demonstration created worst type of traffic mess in the entire locality during rush hours as many motorists remain trapped in the chaos for more than two hours. Long queues of vehicles were also witnessed on both sides of the road as it took almost three hours to the police to clear the road for the traffic.

Heavy police contingents reached the spot and managed to disperse the protesters after holding a series of negotiations with them. According to the deceased family, the driver of the tanker was drunk as the police recovered some bottles of liquor from the tanker. However, the police denied the claim stating that the accident occurred because of over-speeding.
