An interactive youth

Sixty two percent of Pakistan’s population consists of the youth, classified as those in the 18 to 24 age range. Of these, 8 million use social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, My Space, Skype and YouTube which can be enjoyable if used effectively. When too much time is spent on social network, people have less time or desire to directly socialize with others. This could cause a harder time for youth to accomplish important social tasks and peer interaction. There are many ways to divert the young from this harmful activity and engage them in healthy activities, and  one of them can be sports. Sports provide numerous opportunities for children and teenagers to grow socially, emotionally, and physically. Social interaction in team sports teaches youth to unite with their peers, solve conflict, and communicate effectively with their peers. I have heard about the ‘Punjab Youth Festival’ (PYF) which is going on these days and personally I think this is a great platform for youth to show their skills rather wasting time on social network. I would like to suggest the Government to arrange sports festivals like PYF on national level as well. This will benefit people of all provinces and provide opportunity to showcase their talents besides potentially breaking several world records and polishing their sporting skills. Furthermore, it can create a social life, friendship and good health.KHALIDA PARVEEN, Gilgit, January 25.
