Attack on Baloch students in PU widely condemned

QUETTA - Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, other leaders of political parties of the province, lawyers and students yesterday condemned the brutal assault on Pashtoon and Baloch students in the University of the Punjab by Jamaat-e-Islami students’ wing, Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT), and their incarceration by the police. The act of brutality and racism against Pashtoon and Baloch students was termed a conspiracy and an attempt to shut doors for the Balochistan students studying in the Punjab University.

Expressing grave concern over the untoward incident which happened in the Punjab University, Chief Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo termed it intolerable. The chief minister formed a cabinet committee under the supervision of Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti with the task to visit Lahore immediately and meet the affected students. The committee would also ascertain facts behind this incident and hold meetings with the authorities of the Punjab government and the varsity to convey to them the concerns of the Balochistan people and government. The cabinet committee would demand end of racial differences and action against those responsible for the attack on Pashtoon and Baloch students.

The irritating incident of violence and arrest of Pashtoon and Baloch students also enraged Balochistan’s lawyers who announced to boycott court proceedings.

Balochistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Haji Attaulah Langov, in a press statement, announced lawyers’ bodies would boycott courts against the injustices to Balochistan’s students studying in the Punjab University.

Federal Minister for Postal Services Maulana Amir Zaman strongly condemned the attacks on Pashtoon and Baloch students in the Punjab University.

The federal minister, in a press statement, said 1971-like situation was being created in the university and if the Punjab government did not make efforts to fix the situation, it would leave a detrimental impact.

Student wings of various political parties also condemned the incident and demanded stringent steps against the IJT students behind the attack.
