KARACHI - All garbage collecting vehicles in the metropolis will be confiscated and their drivers arrested if found dumping the waste at places other than designated landfill sites.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Karachi Commissioner Ejaz Ahmad Khan and attended by representatives of different concerned civic agencies and major institutions with stakes in the metropolis. Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Managing Director A.D Sanjnani on the occasion presented a list of civic agencies and organisations failing proper and regular transportation of the waste, generated in their jurisdiction, to the land fill sites.

Karachi commissioner taking strong exception to the situation said stringent action will be taken against the violators and that no leniency will be extended to the staffers in particular and people in general involved in exposing masses to serious health risk besides polluting the environment. Participants of the meeting also agreed that restriction imposed on burning of garbage must be strictly implemented and those found violating the law be taken to task without any distinction. It was decided that all municipal organisations will take required measures to improve sanitation in their respective jurisdictions with special focus on cleanliness and efficient disposal of varied categories of waste. He urged the meeting participants to ensure that their respective organisations and agencies cooperate with SSWMB for a clean and environment friendly Karachi.

The meeting among others was also attended by Additional Commissioner-I Farhan Ghani, Deputy Inspector General of Police (East) Zulfiqar Larak, deputy commissioners and municipal commissioners pertaining to all districts, representatives of KMC, Defence Housing Authority, Cantonment Boards, Pakistan Railways and Karachi Port Trust.
