The role of Pakistan military has undergone major changes during the last few months. The authorities have established several activities to promote relation between civilians and armed forces. Governance in Pakistan is a delicate act carried in collaboration between the military chiefs and the elected civilian government. When Gen Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani took over the command, he brought in some changes in the military role and ordered the army not to interfere in political affairs. For maintaining peace and stability in the country the appropriate balance between civilian and army is needed. The military has demonstrated its ability to act as a deterrent force against the adversary attacking the country. It is also greatly contributing in the UN peacekeeping efforts abroad while fighting a number of challenges like war against terror at home. Its main duty is to establish peace in the country, defend its borders and protect its assets. Civil and military cooperation is necessary for the progress of a state. The military needs civilian support to fight against the enemy. -SUMAIRA NAZ, Wah Cantt., via e-mail, July 12.
