There is a build up in the news about the dire need to build Kalabagh Dam in view of grave shortages of water and power bedevilling the nation. We hear about resolve of President Zardari to build the dam as also news divulged by Malik Ghulam Mustafa Khar former Governor of Punjab that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had said that whoever opposed the Kalabagh Dam would be enemy of Pakistan. Now we have to see as to who would dare to take the Kalabagh Dam bull by the horns to subdue it to the lasting benefit of people of Pakistan. Water is life and unless and until we harness the waters of Indus which is called Abaseen i.e father of rivers we cannot escape from the spectre of famine and industrial collapse staring us in the face. I wish Godspeed to the resolve of Mr. Zardari and Mr. Khar about the dire need to build Kalabagh dam, which is the only source to supply 14 % share of water to N.W.F.P. in the absence of any other source. This province has only 5 % irrigated area of Pakistan, which cannot be increased except from Kalabagh Dam. ANP is acting against the interest of its province by refusing to support the dam in their own self interest and are bent upon committing suicide by depriving its province of legitimate share of water only because of political expediency. -DR.
