People’s outbursts

People have finally lost patience and taken to the streets to register their protest against the menace of unannounced spells of loadshedding. There have been reports from major cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad and Sialkot, of angry mobs attacking WAPDA office and grid stations. This was bound to happen mainly due to the indifferent attitude of the authorities concerned, both at the federal as well as provincial levels. There is hardly any doubt that despite repeated promises and pledges made by the federal government, the crisis has deepened instead of being resolved since not a single megawatt of electricity has been added to the national grid making lives of the innocent consumers miserable. There are instances where there was no electricity in some areas for days, yet, the residents received overcharged electricity bills adding unbearable fuel adjustment charges due since January 2012. With no gas and electricity, major industrial units have been rendered idle and tens of thousands of workers jobless. In the 18th Amendment, provinces were empowered to initiate their own power projects. But it would take time and early relief, it seems, is not in sight. President Asif Zardari took serious note of the prevailing situation, yet the power companies did not pay heed to it. The crisis is worsening by the hour and there is a dire need to provide immediate solution to it failing which there is a possibility that scattered protest may begin taking on the character of a serious campaign against the sitting government. Something needs to be done now.
