LAHORE - Despite its registration with the Election Commission of Pakistan with election symbol sword, the PPP is most likely to contest the coming polls on the election symbol of ‘arrow” using the platform of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians.

“In order to avoid legal complications, there is greater likelihood of PPP contesting the next elections on the election symbol of arrow”, the newly-elected General Secretary of PPP, Latif Khosa told TheNation.

The former Punjab governor said that there was no provision in the rules for merger of two such entities. “May be we merge the two after amendment in the relevant rules at some later stage,” he said.

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday registered the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as its Patron-in-Chief. The commission also allotted it the election symbol of ‘Sword’, rejecting the respective claims of Ghinwa Bhutto and Naheed Khan on the PPP.

It is interesting to note that as of now, one political party is registered with the ECP under two different names-Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarians (PPP-P) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), also with two different election symbols. The leadership can chose either of the two platforms to contest the coming elections.

“If we contest the coming polls using the platform of PPP with the new election symbol of ‘Sword’, some legal issues may arise. For example, majority of the senators in the Senate belong to the PPP-P, and if the National Assembly members are elected on PPP’s platform, it may create legal complications,” Khosa told this scribe.

He further said that though a final decision was yet to be made in a meeting of the office-bearers of the two parties, it was highly likely that leadership would decide in favour of PPP-P which is registered with the ECP as a political party since 2002.

When asked what was the motive behind getting the PPP registered with the ECP if the new party is not contesting the elections, he replied: “It was unbearable for us to see the nomenclature of ‘PPP’ going into the hands of dissidents who had betrayed the party. We have emotional attachment with the word, ‘PPP’ which is the legacy of Shaheed ZA Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto,” he said in an emotional tone. He also hailed the decision of ECP, saying that it had handed over the party to its lawful heirs.
