LAHORE - The 11th convocation of the Government College University Lahore is going to be held on Thursday (tomorrow) at the Oval Ground. About 1,400 students from graduation to PhD would receive degrees on the occasion.

GCU Controller Examinations Prof AS Bukhari said that the university administration has almost finalized arrangements for the Convocation 2013. He said that the full-dress rehearsal for the convocation would be held today and the students have been informed in this regard.

ACCORD: The Government College University Lahore has signed 29 agreements in the last two years to promote research and academic activities, it was revealed by the Vice Chancellor Dr Khaleeq-ur-Rahman while addressing a nine-member delegation of students and teachers from various universities of Nepal including Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University. The delegation was led by Prof Dr Subodh Sharma, while GCU Director Research Prof Dr Muhammad Zakria Butt, Director External Links Fauzia Shahin and heads of various academic departments also attended the meeting with the Nepalese academicians.  

Talking to the GCU VC, Prof Dr Subodh Sharma said that the purpose of their visit to Pakistan was to explore opportunities of bilateral cooperation, better understanding and setting up of mutual ties between universities of both countries.

Speaking on the occasion, GCU VC Prof Rahman said modern research was complex and multidisciplinary and it was impossible for single institution or country to possess all the knowledge, equipment, and techniques required, so it was imperative to establish academic and research links and share resources, expertise and equipment with each other. He said that 19 of 29 accords, signed by GCU, were with the reputed foreign universities and international organizations.

The VC said that he would like to encourage the Nepalese students to take admission in the GCU Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences who had been declared emerging regional centre of excellence by the European Mathematical Society. He also briefed the delegation about the other academic programmes offered by GCU.    

Later, the delegation visited the Postgraduate library, sports complex and chemistry laboratories of GCU.  

Meanwhile, the Nepali delegation called on PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran at his office. PU Registrar Dr Khan Rass, Controller Examination Dr Liaqat Ali, Director External Linkages Maria Maldonado and others were present on the occasion. The meeting discussed opportunities of bilateral co-operation and setting up mutual ties among both the countries in the field of education, engineering, information technology and business. Later, Dr Kamran presented souvenirs to the delegates. The delegates also visited PU Main Library where PU Chief Librarian Chaudhry Muhammad Hanif briefed the delegation regarding various sections of Main Library.

Anti-dengue drive:  The Government MAO College held dengue awareness seminar on Tuesday. College Principal Prof Rashid Najeeb presided over the seminar that was attended by a large number of students and teachers. A lecture was delivered regarding the cause, vector, treatment and prevention.

The principal also addressed the audience and highlighted the importance of participation of students and community for the purpose.

Meanwhile, a seminar ‘Dengue and its Precautions’ held at University of Education. Manager Dengue Control Programe of Directorate of Health Dr. Nadeem Raza delivered a lecture regarding protection from dengue virus, precautions and its treatment.

By giving a detailed  presentation on symptoms, precautions and treatment of Dengue virus Dr. Nadeem Raza said that believing in the proverb “Prevention is better than Cure” this fatal disease can be controlled easily through care. He added that so many countries are affected by this virus and in Thailand where one million people are affected per year but ratio of death is very low because of precautionary measures taken to prevent this disease.

UET contest: The University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Kala Shah Kakoo Campus organized a poster and project competition.

On the occasion, a third year student of UET Moeed Riaz Ahmed presented a hovercraft project. The performance attracted the attention of the audience. Moeed Riaz Ahmed got the first position in the competition. He was awarded with the best project award on the occasion.
