LAHORE - Leaders of all the major political parties, while deeming Supreme Courts decision about the Sharif brothers, have observed that uncertainty in politics has ended due to this decision, and democratic values will be strengthened and political stability will prevail in the country. To mark the occasion, people from different walks of life celebrated the decision by dancing and distributing sweets. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the judiciary was restored in the country on March 16 after a 2-year long struggle of lawyers and political parties as well as numerous sacrifices by the people and the historic decision of Tuesday has been given by an independent and free judiciary which is a matter of pride for the whole nation and an occasion for thanksgiving. All segments of society took an active part in the movement for the setting up of an independent judiciary as a result of which such judges are now available who can fulfill the demands of justice. After this historic decision, all out resources will have to be utilised for the provision of socio-economic justice to the masses. Problems of the people can be resolved by complete implementation of Charter of Democracy, he said while talking to the media here on Tuesday. CM said the former dictator General Pervez Musharraf made every effort to subjugate judiciary, strangulate democracy, stifle the parliament and gag the people but all segments of society took an active part in the movement for restoration of judiciary and their efforts met fruition. Democracy and protection of the rights of the people depend upon a free judiciary. The whole nation wanted an independent judiciary and a number of precious lives were lost in the movement for the purpose, he added, while stressing the need for unity in the country for elimination of terrorism and extremism as well as to foil the designs of such internal and external forces which wanted to destabilise the country. In reply to a question, the CM further said the elections of 2002 were sham while the military dictator and his cronies did their best to eliminate Nawaz Sharif and him from the electoral arena. Responding to a query about the participation of Nawaz Sharif in the elections, the CM said the decision in this regard would be taken by the parliamentary party of Pakistan Muslim League. Nawaz Sharif will play his active role for the strengthening of institutions, abolishment of the 17th amendment and in the interest of Pakistan, he added. Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan and PTIs other leaders congratulated the Sharif brothers on the reversal of their disqualification. It has always been PTIs stance that only independent judiciary and rule of law can save the country, they added. Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hassan has said the decision of the Apex Court is a victory of the Constitution, and the democratic forces. Now it is the time to bring General (r) Pervez Musharraf to the court of law. The Generals accountability has been delayed unjustifiably, and there should be no more delay. Now he should be arrested and brought to the book, he added, while opining that after the decision, demand for the mid-term elections would gain momentum. Special Assistant to CM Punjab, Muhammad Mansha Ullah Butt has said that the decision is the victory of truth, patriotism and justice. The country will strengthen politically and democratic institutions will become strong. All cases against Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif were based on ill-intentions and a dictator tried to remove the popular leadership from the scene to prolong his rule, but the history has once again repeated itself that the dictator is living in isolation while the popular leadership has become successful before the people, he added.
