Medics 'impertinence' baffles patients

LAHORE - The poor patients seeking free treatment at public hospitals under Chief Minister scheme are in big trouble which is evident from the incident that occurred in the Services Hospital when a poor wagon-driver took his 80-year-old ailing mother back to his house in protest against inhuman attitude of the doctors and administration of the hospital. She was admitted in the Medical Ward-III of the hospital. Punjab CMs free treatment scheme to poor patients seems to be collapsing as the people are not only facing acute shortage of medicine rather doctors hostile attitude have aggravated their problems manifold. An unpleasant incident took place in the Services Hospital here the other day as the doctors misbehaved with a Nizamabad resident and wagon-driver Muhammad Shahid and his 80-year-old ailing mother Kareem Bibi for demanding free treatment. Shahid told this scribe that the doctors turned harsh towards him soon after he asked them to provide treatment to his mother free of cost under CMs scheme. Giving details, he said that he took his elderly mother Kareem Bibi to the Services Hospital emergency department due to her critical condition a week back. The doctors at the emergency department examined her and after analysing reports suggested a treatment of at least 15 days at the hospital. They later shifted her to the Medical III department where the doctors misbehaved with him and his ailing mother shortly after he asked the medics to enrol his mother for free treatment under CMs scheme. He said two days after the admission of his mother the doctors suggested him that if he wanted to get her mother treated in the hospital, he would have to purchase medicines from market. He said when he informed the on-duty doctors that he belonged to a poor family and could not purchase costly medicines from market; they (doctors) turned aggressive and mentally tortured him to the extent that in protest against their attitude he took his mother back from the hospital. The poor driver has appealed the chief minister Punjab to take stern action against the highhandedness of the hospital doctors. When contacted for comments the MS did not attend his cell phone.
