Amina Jilani (The Nation May 17) has repeated what many pro-west columnists keep parroting all the time "People loath US yet yearn to go there and get their children educated there". I loathed Bush and his policies towards the Muslim world yet I would have given my left arm for another (my fourth) holiday in the US. Why is it so difficult for these critics to see the wide gulf between the hated US government policies, dictated by AIPAC, and the generally friendly American people who live in this beautiful country with their wonderful way of life. My only criticism of the American people is that lately, they have allowed their Presidents to play hell with the Muslim world in their quest for oil. Their present fury against Pakistan is also due to their frustration with their own inability to secure Afghanistan and the Caspian Sea oil. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, May 17.
