LAHORE The Punjab Food Department is still continuing procuring wheat from the growers, and will keep on doing so till it meets the target of four million tonnes. Secretary Food Irfan Elahi said so far the Department had procured 3.63million tonnes of wheat, and on Wednesday, 28000 tonnes were purchased from growers. He mentioned that the Department would not buy wheat from the middlemen anymore. He explicitly denied the assertion that the Food Department had stopped wheat procurement and it was falling short of money, since the Bank of Punjab had provided Rs 6billion for wheat. There is nothing of the sort since neither there is a shortage of money, nor the Department has stopped the procurement, he added. About taking disciplinary action against the officers and officials of the Department, he said disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the wrongdoers, and FIRs had been lodged against about a dozen of culprits, while a few arrests had been made as well by the police. As per sources, during a series of surprise raids conducted by the Divisional Commissioners, District Coordination Officers and food department teams, District Food Controllers, Assistant Food Controllers, Supervisors and Inspectors were found guilty of violating the wheat procurement policy.
