RAWALPINDI - In a shocking incident, a retired lieutenant-general of Pakistan Army committed suicide by shooting himself with a 9mm pistol at his home in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase-I on Saturday.
Police moved the body of Lt-Gen (re) Imtiaz Hussain, 70, to the DHQ Hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to the heirs for burial.
Area SHO Ikhlaq, while talking to this scribe, said Tariq, the brother of deceased general, lodged a complaint with the Morgah Police Station, in which he stated that Lt-Gen (r) Imtiaz committed suicide by shooting in his head. The applicant added that his brother had been suffering from depression.
Police registered a case and recovered the 9mm pistol, said the SHO, adding that police had started investigating the matter. Seeking anonymity, a doctor, who conducted autopsy, said bullet hit in the left side of the temple and exited from opposite end.
It was also learnt that the family of deceased found the body at around 12:10 pm lying in a pool of blood in his room with a bullet mark on his head. The family members immediately shifted the dead body to the Fauji Foundation Hospital (FFH), where the doctors pronounced him dead. From the FFH, the body was transported to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), but it was finally taken to the DHQ for an autopsy, as military authorities decided that it was a police case.
Lt-Gen (r) Imtiaz, who belonged to the Six Sindh Regiment, served as the adjutant general at the General Headquarter (GHQ) and chairman of Askari Welfare Trust (AWT). The deceased was issueless and had adopted a son, Haris.
