ISLAMABAD - The training camp of Pakistan Squash team for the upcoming World Team Squash Championship to be held in France from June 9th to 15th, has been delayed due to players involvement in different PSA events.
Currently top PSA ranked player Nasir Iqbal has left for Hong Kong to participate in the $ 35,000 championship, where he would play in the qualifying round. Farhan Mahboob, Farhan Zaman and Syed Ali Bukhari had also left for Kuwait. All these players are in the main round of the event while Sh Saqib, Tayyab Aslam and Ammad Fareed would play in the qualifying round.
After a prolonged process of trails matches, the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) finally managed to select a four-member team to represent Pakistan in the World Squash team championship, which include Farhan Mahboob, Nasir Iqbal, Farhan Zaman and Sh Saqib. All these players had hardly played as a team together. Now instead of starting a training camp immediately, the PSF had allowed these players to participate in the PSA events, which would only help these youngsters to improve their world rankings but it would certainly hurt Pakistan cause of doing well in the prestigious event.
The players would return by the end of the month, which left hardly one week for them to train as a team and would give a headache to head coach Jamshed Gul to prepare this squad for the world championship.
In the absence of top player Aamir Atlas, Pakistan have already fielded a weak side. The PSF should have acted in the best interest of the country and should have started the training of the selected team instead of allowing them to appear in the PSA events.  Federation could argue that by participating in the PSA events it would be beneficial for the players as they remain in competitive action, but it would serve no purpose to the Pakistan team, as this is the time these players should practice together to develop a team combination, which would be required during the France event.
It seems the PSF, considering the weakness of their squad, is least bothered about preparing them for the event and as result the country would suffer miserably, like it suffered in the last team championship in Germany, where Pakistan finished at 22nd place.
