Clashes as PML-Q man wins PP-275 by-polls

BAHAWALPUR - PML-Q candidate Ch Ehsanul Haq on Saturday won the PP-275 (Yazman) by-poll defeating PML-N candidate Khalid Mehmood Jajja. According to the unofficial results, Ehsan defeated rival candidate with a margin of 4,379 votes. PML-Q candidate, Ch Ehsanul Haq secured 34,796 votes while his opponent PML-Ns Khalid Mehmood Jajja got 30,417 votes in the election as reported from 115 polling stations of the constituency. The independent candidate, Ch Muhammad Saeed got 3,842 votes. A PML-Q worker, Attique reportedly received bullet injuries in a clash between PML-N and the PML-Q workers celebrating partys victory after the votes counting at all the polling stations. The injured was shifted to the BVH, Bahawalpur for treatment. Influence of the former provincial minister and district nazim Bahawalpur, Ch Tariq Bashir Cheema, PPPs support and poor performance of the PML-N played a key role in the victory of the PML-Q candidate. Meanwhile, the clashes among rival groups in the PP-275 by-polls in Yazman disrupted the voting process at various polling stations in the constituency and a number of supporters of rival groups sustained injuries. Polling remained suspended for quite some time at Chak No.108/DNB and Chak No.113/DB, Yazman stations. The RPO Bahawalpur Region, Capt (R) Syed Abid Qadri said that all out efforts were made for free, fair and impartial elections in the PP-275 under peaceful conditions but even then there were some minor clashes which were controlled timely and strict action would be initiated against the responsible. He said overall the situation was under control as more than 2,000 cops including lady cops had been deputed in the constituency to maintain law and order. He said DPO Bahawalpur was also there to supervise the proceedings. Though section 144 was imposed in the constituency to maintain law and order but even then clashes occurred. The day was declared as a local holiday in the PP-275 constituency. Eleven candidates were in the run while PML-Ns Khalid Mehmood Jajja, PML-Qs Ch Ehsanul Haq and an independent candidate Ch Mohammad Saeed were the main contenders. 115 polling stations were set-up in the constituency. As many as 49 polling stations were declared sensitive in PP-275 by-election. 360 polling booths were set-up out of which 197 were for men and 163 for ladies. The registered voters in this constituency are 1,58,455 from which 87,023 were males and the remaining were female voters. The polling remained continued from 8:00am to 5:00pm without interval and both the old and new national identity cards were valid for casting the votes.
