LAHORE – Inspector General of Police Muhammad Habibur Rehman has said that the police nicked 35 terror suspects from different districts of the province.

The provincial police chief further said that due to the successful operations, the police provided foolproof security to thousands of Majalis and processions across the province during the holy month of Muharram.

The IGP stated this while addressing a press conference here at Police Club on Monday Lahore CCPO Aslam Tareen, DIG (Investigations) Chaudhry Shafique, DIG (Operations) Muhammad Tahir Rai and SP CIA Omar Virk were also present on this occasion.

The IGP aid that on the directions of Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, the Punjab police with the assistance of intelligence agencies, have not only ensured foolproof security around Majalis and processions during Muharram but also foiled possible terror attempts successfully and saved the province from deadly terror strikes. It all happened due to the untiring efforts of all the police officers and officials and we salute them, the police chief said.

The IGP said that the police provided security cover to 37,249 Majalis and 9,136 processions all over the province; while 69 units of Pak Army and 35 units of Pak Rangers were also put on-call to cope with the situation in case of any emergency.

The IGP said that at least 118,308 police officers / officials – including 78,930 policemen; 8,780 Elite police personnel; 17,808 Police Qaumi Razakars; and 12,790 officials from the special police force – had been deployed across the province to maintain peace and law and order during Muharram. Similarly, 36 special police teams comprising senior officers were dispatched to all the districts for Muharram security.

The provincial police officer said that the police foiled possible terror attempts by arresting 35 terror suspects from different districts including three from Lahore, two from Gujrat, four from Faisalabad, nine from Layyah, six from Sargodha, one from Vehari, and 10 from Multan.

The IGP said that the terror suspects arrested from Sargodha belonged to Bajur Agency and Khyber Agency and they had been residing close to an Imambargah in Sargodha. They had been planning to attack processions on 9 and 10 of Muharram.

The police also arrested four terror suspects from Faisalabad including a woman. One of the arrested terror suspects had been in police uniform while they had been planning to attack an Imambargah, or a procession or a Majlis in the limits of Balochni police station. The Faisalabad police also recovered a rifle, gun and bullets in huge quantity from their possession. Muhammad Habib-ur-Rehman further said that the police bravely destroyed the nefarious designs of the anti-state elements by launching successful operations.

Responding to a question about security for international cricket matches, the IGP Punjab said that the police provided foolproof security to the recently held International Sports Festival and the police are also ready to provide best security to the international cricket teams.

To another question about the deaths in Shahdara Town because of intoxicated syrup, the IGP said that the factory owner managed to escape soon after the incident.

However, the owner of the medical store and his employees are arrested and being interrogated in connection with the killings. The media will be informed accordingly in case any further development, the IGP concluded.
