Govt may offer suspension of few ministers till inquiry

ISLAMABAD - Ruling PML-N leadership has once again started pondering options to restart dialogue with protesters, who are still holding ground at Faizabad Interchange.

According to the sources in the party, the move came after Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javid Bajwa suggested in a civil-military huddle on Sunday that the responsible persons or those guilty of introducing the changes in the declaration form for candidates on finality of Prophet-hood of Mohammad (PBUH) should be taken to task and that protesters should be engaged in dialogue to resolve the issue.

After the suggestion, the government has sprung into the action and started working out on various plans to restart negotiations with protesters and also accept some of their demands as per army chief’s advice.

The main demand of the protesters is the resignation of Law Minister Hamid Zahid and to fix responsibility on all those responsible for altering the declaration forms for candidates.

Law Minister Zahid has once again offered to resign for the sake of peace to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and also held meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif who had overtly asked former premier Nawaz Sharif to remove the person responsible for this negligence from cabinet, when the issue had first surfaced. A few days ago, Zahid Hamid had also made the same offer but PM Abbasi and party chief Nawaz Sharif had refrained him to do so as it would show weakness on government’s part especially when he had no role in the whole affair.

Leader of House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq, who also held inquiry into the matter, also said that for bringing peace and tranquility in the country resignations of couple of ministers would make no difference.

However, according to sources, the government is still reluctant to fully accept the resignation demands as by taking resignations from ministers would imply them guilty in the case which would not only endanger their lives but would be unjust if they come out innocent in the inquiry.

Instead, the government is contemplating to suspend couple of ministers and would offer the protesters leaders to form an investigating committee comprising religious scholars to examine the whole issue to fix responsibility in the case.

These sources said that the negotiators from government side, comprising religious scholars, would take this proposal to the protesters and would try to convince them.

Sources in the party said the government was also mulling different options to keep the situation under control as earlier attempt of crackdown on protesters of Tehreek-i-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah Pakistan (TLY) at Faizabad triggered protests across the country, particularly in Punjab.
