Shahid Kamal tipped as new Foreign Secretary

ISLAMABAD In what could be described as a major reshuffle in the Foreign Office, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir will replace Abdullah Hussein Haroon as Pakistans permanent representative to the United Nations. In July 2008, Hussain Haroon was appointed as the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations replacing veteran Munir Akram. The appointment was controversial because Haroon had no prior experience in the Pakistan Foreign Service or international diplomacy. He is said to have got long leave paving the way for Salman Bashir to replace him. In another change, name of Shahid Kamal (Ambassador of Pakistan in Berlin-Germany) has been finalised to replace Salman Bashir as Foreign Secretary. Shahid Kamal earned great respect among the business community of Pakistan as well as in Germany by promoting business activities between Pakistan and Germany. It is pertinent to mention here that on 21 June 2010, a group of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry paid rich tribute to Shahid Kamal for taking personal interest in promotion of Sialkot made balls in Germany. Shahid Kamal has been writing articles in various German publications in a bid to build good image of Pakistan. During his tenure as Ambassador in Germany, there has been noted a remarkable increase in bilateral trade especially the export of hand-made football of Sialkot. His articles inculcated into the minds of the Germans that Pakistan was known for producing international quality products, which are supplied all around the world. Name of incumbent Spokesperson of Foreign Office Muhammad Abdul Basit is almost finalised to replace Shahid Kamal as Pakistans Ambassador to Germany, said the sources. However, authorities were considering him for Ambassadors slot in Tehran as well. Basit falls in category A of diplomats and he is considered as a seasoned diplomat of Foreign Office. His capability as well as credibility has made the authorities to ponder that where to take benefit from this well polished career diplomat. For Pakistan both of the stations including Tehran and Berlin are of great importance, which require an efficient diplomat, which may yield desired results even in the most stressed atmosphere. Well places sources say that chances were there to appoint Basit as Ambassador in Germany. Pakistans incumbent Ambassador to France Shafqat Saeed is returning home as he has already retired. Special Secretary Foreign Office Haroon Shaukat will be replacing him shortly as authorities cannot afford to leave such an important European station without Ambassador, said the sources. Meanwhile Pakistans Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ali Sherzai is being replaced by another career diplomat Ishtiaq Andarabi. Sources have predicted a large-scale reshuffle in the Foreign Office and Pakistans missions abroad further down the road. Well placed all time credible sources said Pakistans Ambassador to China Masood Khan is most likely to get one year extension - a move which can make the career diplomats angry.
