SARGODHA - Peace could only be ensured in society by resolving social and political conflicts. The media has the capacity and role to reduce the degree of conflicts by making the society well-informed and educated, said University of Sargodha Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Akram Chaudhry while presiding over a daylong seminar on Role of Media to Promote Peace in society organised by the Department of Communication Studies in collaboration with a local NGO. Dr Akram Ch maintained that the University of Sargodha was a big venture for the people of Sargodha and its suburb areas to bringing a social change by spreading information and knowledge and making the people literate and educated. He further said that the UOS was promoting Knowledge Based Economy in the country by starting various innovative and developmental projects in the university. The UoS has introduced 20 days mandatory community services for all graduates by bringing the students in required fields allocated by the district government, he told the audience. He explained the responsibilities of media and stressed that media should lead the public through opinion-making programmes and writings along with informing them. He announced that in near future the University of Sargodha would introduce the first-ever lab of Human Performance in Pakistan which would assist the sportsmen to analyze their performance and capacity. Earlier, senior journalist Sohail Ahmad Warraich delivered his speech on the topic. He said that Pakistani media had become the people media and it would be bound to express what they explored. Pakistani media is showing nothing except truth which is better. A section of the society does not want to see such unwanted stories and they blame the media, argued Warraich and asked the university faculty and intellectuals to come forward with media and try to reduce the conflicts through their collective wisdom and make the society peaceful. Earlier, renowned film-maker Rafiq Shehzad said that through positive essence of media, better entertainment could be provided to people which could help bring revolutionary changes in society. He was of the view that a good film could change the minds into fruitful roots. In his address Dr Nawaz Mehsud, Chairman Department of Communication Studies underlined the responsibilities of media to provoke and promote peace in society. Senior faculty and a large number of students attended the seminar.
