OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE - Punjab Governor Latif Khosa has said lawyers movement played a pivotal role for rule of law, respect for the constitution and independence of judiciary which is one of the essentials of a democratic state. He was addressing the awarding of grants and cheques distribution ceremony held at a local on Wednesday. The ceremony was also attended by President Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jehangir, President Lahore Bar President, Shahzad Hassan Sheikh, Mian Jehangir Vice President Lahore High Court Bar, members of Pakistan Bar Council and Punjab Bar Council Executive Committee members of Supreme Court, High Court and Lahore Bar, cabinet members of Bar, and around three thousand Lahore Bar members were also present on this occasion. The Governor said PPP had given empowerment to lawyers and Federal Government was lawyers friendly. He said allocation of Evacuee Trust Board land on Dev Samaaj Road Lahore for Benazir Shaheed lawyers hospital was worth of more than one billion rupees and the hospital would be completed by the federal government and for this purpose one crore rupees had been issued by the Prime Minister while Rs. 2 crore had been given to Lahore High Bar Association. Governor Khosa said 35 crore rupees were being spent on Supreme Court Bar Association hostel which would facilitate them and said government would continue to give its full support to legal fraternity. Governor further said lawyers were the guardian of the rule of law and they design and build the society and they were the social architect of the society. He said country was created by a lawyer (Quaid-i-Azam) and the constitution of 1973 was also brought about by a lawyer Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He stressed upon the lawyer to excel in mental discipline, logical thinking and organization of ideas which would transform then into a perfect lawyer. Governor Punjab lauded the role of print and electronic media for educating the people on constitutional supremacy. Asma Jehangir speaking on the occasion said lawyers were the pillar of democracy and young lawyers had played their role for restoration of judiciary in a proactive manner. President Lahore Bar Shahzad Hassan Sheikh in his speech praised the Governor Khosa for his untiring efforts regarding welfare of legal fraternity.
